Advocacy

Family Service started the Advocacy Program in 1974 to study community issues, determine needs, and implement changes. Following is a description of Advocacy; what it is, how it works, what we have done, and consultation available.

SYSTEMS ADVOCACY - What is it?

  • Systems Advocacy works with groups of individuals and communities to break down barriers to effective, and responsive services
  • Systems Advocacy prevents "burn-out" for direct-service staff who cannot get what they need for their clients

How does it work?

  • Identifies laws, policies, services that should be helping individuals and communities but need positive changes to become more responsive and effective
  • Seeks to implement the changes needed
  • Identifies services that are needed and advocates for their implementation
  • Convenes individuals and organizations to bring about positive changes
  • Evaluates those changes for effectiveness

Isn't this too confrontational?

Change is always threatening, but Systems Advocacy stresses collaboration and cooperation. We are invested in long-term changes built on relationships that benefit all parties whenever possible. We are invested in making things work, not tearing things down.   Occasionally, this means standing very firm but always with a doable vision in sight.

What kinds of issues have you advocated for?

Priority is given to disadvantaged, under-powered populations that are suffering from unequal access or treatment particularly as the issues relate to the areas of social problems. Victims of domestic violence, children affected by HIV/AIDS, children coping with divorce, teen parents, children who need protection - over 150 issues since 1974.
